US President Donald Trump has sent his best wishes to Pope Leo XIV, saying he had spoken to the pontiff’s brother. “I spoke to his brother. He’s a fantastic person, he’s a friend of mine. I told him: please, give him my best wishes,” Trump told Tgcom24.

The statement came in response to a question from correspondent Maria Luisa Rossi Hawkins, who asked Trump whether he intended to speak directly with the Pope following the conversation between Leo XIV and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said he wished the pontiff well, highlighting his friendship with the Pope’s brother. However, the US president did not clarify whether a direct conversation with Leo XIV was planned.

Trump’s remarks come amid an international context marked by the war in Ukraine and diplomatic contacts between key figures involved in the crisis. It remains to be seen whether the wishes conveyed through the Pope’s brother will be followed by a direct conversation between the US president and the pontiff.
